Elliott Family

There are two Elliott lines of significance in the history of Rocks Village. Both lines reputedly hark back to the same immigrant ancestor, Edmund Elliott, from Amesbury/Salisbury. The Ephraim Elliott line is tied to the village starting in the 1700’s through land ownership, inheritance, and marriages to other local families, including to the other Elliott line. Ephraim Elliott, a saddler by trade, bought the Peaslee Garrison house from Amos Peaslee in 1758, and it remained in his family for many generations. The Samuel Elliot line enters our story later in the mid 1800’s when Samuel and his brother George came to the village, set up a store and a shoe factory on E. Main St. employing local shoe artisans. Their little factory grew into one of the first major shoe factories in downtown Haverhill (S&G Elliott). Samuel married a great-granddaughter of Ephraim Elliot, and built a large home on Elliot Rd near Northern Essex. Both the Garrison house and the Elliott homestead are still standing today.

Ephraim Elliott, born in 1725/6 in Amesbury to Thomas Elliott and Judith Worthen, was an early purchaser of land in Rocks Village and the immediate area. Ephraim married Mary Wingate in 1752, daughter of Rev. Payne Wingate. Mary is related by marriage to Mary Ingalls, of countess fame.

When Ephraim died in 1809 he left a considerable legacy of real estate in Haverhill including in Rocks Village and in New Sharon, ME., to his sons Thomas, Ephraim Jr., and James. Thomas married Sarah Swett, granddaughter of John Swett III, and together they ran the tavern on E. Main St. that was later split into two parts and moved, one part to Old Amesbury Line Road, the other to become 12 River Rd. Both Ephraim and later his son Thomas owned land on both sides of E Main St. Thomas and Sarah’s daughter Sally Elliott married the French exile from Guadeloupe Joseph de Poyen, and they also owned several properties in the village. Daughter Mary and her husband Francis Carr owned considerable land north of E. Main St. until they left for Maine in 1804. Daughter Elizabeth married Moses Moody who owned most of the woodland south of E Main St. for many years. Elizabeth and Moses Moody owned and probably lived at 34 E. Main St. in the 1820’s.

Ephraim and Mary’s daughter Abigail married Francis Swan and eventually moved to New Sharon, ME. Her sister Elizabeth Elliott Moody adopted the son of Abigail and Francis Swan named Moses. Moses changed his name to Moses Swan Moody and inherited his adopted father’s woodlands on the south side of E. Main St. Another daughter, Sophia married John Ayer who taught at the RV school.

The two Elliott lines came together when Sophia and John Ayer’s daughter Sophia Ayer married Samuel Elliot in 1844. Samuel Elliott (1817- 1890) along with his brother George were real estate developers as well as shoe manufacturers. Samuel and George Elliott are sons of David and Abigail (Estabrooks) Elliott. David Elliott (1787-1840) was a chaise/harness maker and owned land on the “Island of 4 acres”, property behind the Countess House, and lived in the house at 34 E Main St. His wife Abigail was the daughter of Samuel Estabrooks Jr.() a cooper, (1762-1793) and Hannah Silloway who lived for many years at 7 River Rd. Abigail Estabrooks Elliott maintained her own household next to her sons on E. Main St., where she brought up her other children alone after her husband David died in 1840. She was literally surrounded by family – in addition to her two sons, many Estabrook relatives also lived in the village.

Samuel Elliott Line

This line is reputed to extend back to the same Edmund Elliot as the other Elliott line.

David Elliot (July 19, 1787 – July 3, 1840) marries Abigail Easterbrooks, June 7, 1812. David is purported to have died in the Whittier homestead. David Elliott was a chaise and harness maker. Abigail (Nov 12, 1788 – May 8, 1870) was the daughter of Samuel Esterbrooks Jr. a cooper, (1762-1793) and Hannah Silloway who lived at 7 River Rd. Both David and Abigail are bur Greenwood, marked by a large Elliott marker.[FindAGrave]

In 1820 he resided in Amesbury  but from 1824 to 1839 the family lived in half of 34 E Main St.  By 1840 they may have moved  near Corliss Hill since the census lists the household near Aaron Chase and Richard Stuart. David died in 1840 leaving Abigail with nine children: Sam (age 22), George, and seven girls. Census data indicates that Abigail ran her own household through at least 1865 in the village at 20-26 E. Main St., next to her sons’ shoe factory and store. She died in 1870.

Children of David and Abigail:

Samuel Elliott Mar. 19, 1817- 23 Sep 1890 Newburyport Bur. Greenwood (FAG] but not listed on Elliott marker. m Sophia Elliott Ayer (1821-1886), see Ephraim Elliott line above. 27 Dec. 1844.

In 1843 Sam bought property on the north side of E. Main St. probably the old Swett tavern at #28. He also bought a piece of land adjacent to it between the tavern and his mother’s house (located at about #20 or 24). This was the land that would later contain the store. In 1850 census Samuel and Sophia and children were sharing a house with another shoemaker and his wife, John and Martha Chase, in the village, possibly the tavern just before it was split and moved. Samuel’s real estate holdings were worth $2000.  In 1854 Samuel built a new house on the land where the tavern had been (#28 E. Main). An 1856 map shows Mrs. A Elliott west of a ‘store’ and Samuel Elliott east of the store, directly across E. Main from the Countess House, ie at #28.

According to the account below, Samuel ran the country store by day and cut shoes at night. Sam attended two winter terms of Hampton Academy, paid for by his own earnings.  Samuel appears in the census for 1860 as residing in the same vicinity of 20-28 E. Main St., likely to be also the location of his first shoe factory. George was living next door to Sam in his own household and engaged in the shoe business with Samuel. At that point Samuel owned $8000 worth of real estate. In 1865 Sam and George purchased 1 Wharf Lane but did not live there. By 1870 Sam owned $10,000 worth of real estate and had moved away from the village, somewhere closer to Amesbury Rd (probably 26 Elliott Street homestead by then, built in 1856). By 1881 Sam owned land all over East Parish as shown in 1881 map – by Country Bridge, Rte 110, Elliott Rd. and also downtown.

One account:

In his young manhood, Samuel opened a little store in Rocks Village, a country store with the usual variety of West India goods, clothes and small wares. But in the evenings he cut shoes, and so by industry and thrift he laid a sure foundation for a successful life. He early established himself at Rocks Village in the manufacture of slippers, and to some extent of pegged goods, where he became a large manufacturer for that time.

He attended the old Whittier School near the poet’s homestead, and finished his education at Atkinson and Colby academies and New London, New Hamp- shire. He became associated with his father in the boot and shoe industry, but retired from active business after his father’s death, his time then being occupied in managing the Elliott estate. He was preeminently a Haverhill boy, its legends and traditions he cherished from their very foundation. The traits of a patriotic, progressive and intellectual ancestry were found in his character. He was gracious and urbane, dignified, but not austere, and withal a man of affairs. He did not take part in public matters, but those with whom he came in contact knew him to hold strong and decided views, and he was well read and an original thinker. He was a member of the Pentucket Club, and popular with his fellow clubmen. He was an attendant at the Second Church in Rocks Village, was ever interested in its welfare and assisted the church financially. He died March 6, 1916, loved and respected by all who knew him.

Boston Globe obituary: Though not taking part in public life he privately gave generously to charity, both through institutions and directly to private needy families. Was a member of Sagahew Lodge of Masons, Haverhill Commandery, K.T., and the Pentucket Club.

In 1855 George age 26 was still living with his mother Abigail and his siblings, at 20-28 E. Main St. next door to his brother Samuel. He married in 1856.  In 1860 Sam and George were living next to each other in the village each in his own household and engaged in the shoe business. In 1865 George was still fabricating shoes in the village and his mother was still living nearby (she would die 5 years later).  In 1865 Sam and George purchased 1 Wharf Lane but did not live there. By 1880 George is listed as a ‘retired shoe manufacturer’ at age 50 and living on Harvard St. in Haverhill. He seems to own considerable real estate up by Amesbury Rd (Rte 110). By 1910 he had moved in with his son George Clement Elliott and his family, where he died in 1916.

G E Elliott is on a 1881 map owning considerable acreage surrounding JG Whittier birthplace both sides of 110,

Samuel Elliott Deeds:

Chase (34 East Main) 8R, North by John Johnson 8R, west by Enoch Foot (22-24 east main), 6R and south by road 8R. (This is the old Swett tavern. Chase’s half of tavern moved to OAL Rd, other half to heirs of John Osgood, became 12 River Rd.  (Perhaps Poyen has this through his wife Sally Elliott, d of Thomas Elliott and Sarah Swett who ran the tavern, but Thomas’ father Ephraim might have owned the land from that original sale by John Swett that carved out a piece around Elliott land)

1844, Aug 7: Enoch Foot to Samuel Elliott (487/71) corner of Samuel Elliott and road, northerly 6R) to land of Johnson, Westerly 28 feet to land of Abigail Elliott (6R), and southerly to road 28′ along road back to corner of road and S. Elliott. (This could be the store)

1854: #28 built by Samuel Elliott in same spot where John Swett Tavern used to be after it was split apart.

1865 750/32 1 Wharf sold by Abby McQuesten to Samuel and George Elliott. They seemed to have owned the house for many years but did not live there. An 1881 map shows R. Thompson living there. At one point Joseph Estabrook’s daughter Isabella Currier, cousin of Mary Elliott and Joseph Estabrook Jr., seemed to live there but defaulted on her mortgage from George Elliott and he sold it at public auction in 1899 to himself. In 1902 he sold to Francis True.
