Burrill

Joseph Burrill/Burrell was an early settler of Rocks Village. He owned one of the four houses that existed in the village in 1750, according to Phineas Nichols. His house was situated between what is now 7 River Road and Phineas Nichols House at 21 River Road. The Burrill house burned down in 1936 just after the flood.

Joseph (b abt 1702 in Lynn) married Hannah (Daniels) Estabrooks in 1743. Hannah (b 1702 Sherborn – d aft.1747 in Haverhill) had been previously married to Elijah Estabrooks in Sherborn, Mass. and had eight children by him. Hannah brought with her to Rocks Village several of her children including Samuel Estabrooks, age 5. Joseph Burrill was a carpenter and shipwright and his stepson Samuel learned carpentry. Samuel Estabrooks and his offspring and Joseph Estabrooks and his children all lived in Rocks Village for many years, some of the time on River Rd. (see Estabrooks family). Joseph and Hannah Burrill had three children: Joshua, Theophilus, and John Burrill, born between 1744 and 1747, and registered in Newbury.
