John Stevens was born in Newbury, MA on 19 Nov 1650, the son of William and Elizabeth (Bidfield) Stevens. William Stevens was born Sep 1, 1616 Cabersham, Oxford, England. He came to Newbury, MA on the ship “Confidence” and died at Newbury May 19, 1653. He married Elizabeth May 19, 1645. She died Sep 24, 1676 at Newbury.
His will, which mentions his wife Mary, was written 15 Jan 1724/25 and proved 6 Apr 1725.

John kept Elizabeth Wardwell whose father Samuel was hanged as a witch in Andover, MA.

*Stephen Johnson Sr. m(2) Ruth Kimball Dec 13, 1716 Haverhill, MA, the same year that his first wife, Sarah Whittaker, had died. Stephen and Ruth had Abigail Johnson who married Benjamin Stevens, Jr. They had Dea. Jonathan Stevens who m Mary Johnson Tirell. Thus Mary’s father Stephen Johnson Jr. and her mother-in-law Abigail Johnson were half-siblings.

Stephen Johnson Sr. was involved in witch trials in Andover in 1692 as was his mother, Elizabeth Dane, and several other members of the family. Elizabeth Dane was the daughter of Rev. Francis Dane b Nov 20, 1615 Bishops-Stortford, England d Feb 17 1696-7 Andover, MA and Elizabeth Ingalls (first wife) b 1622 d June 9, 1676 Andover. They lived in Ipswich and Andover, MA. John Johnson and Rev. Dane were neighbors in Andover.

Rev. Francis Dane argued and petitioned against the witchcraft trials for many years. He, his daughter Elizabeth and her son Stephen and other relations who were accused of witchcraft  were finally freed. The full story is here. See also Wikipedia.
