Foot Family

One branch of the Foot family with roots in Rocks Village is descended from Pasco Foote b 1604 in Bedfordshire, England who arrived in Salem about 1634. His grandson Samuel Foot who received land grants in Amesbury and attained the rank of captain, was captured by the Indians in the assault on Amesbury and tortured to death in 1690. Many generations later his descendant Ephraim Foot, born in 1772 in Amesbury, had two sons, Samuel and John, who married Rocks Village girls and settled in the village in the early 1800’s. Samuel married Betsy Ingersoll Harriman, daughter of Zebulon Ingersoll of 1 Wharf Lane.  Samuel owned land at 29 Wharf Lane starting in about 1824. It is unknown when the house at that location was built, but Samuel and Betsy did live there with their daughter Dolly and son-in-law Moses Little according to the 1855 census. They eventually sold the house to the Littles, and Dolly is shown as still living there on an 1872 map. John Foot married Sarah Rollins. They lived in Amesbury and later moved to the village (1850 census). John and Sarah’s daughter Abby married Moses Jacques, a cordwainer. They owned the house at 21 E. Main St. starting in 1833 and lived there for many years. In 1865 John is listed as living with them, widowed, at age 63, a farmer.

A separate branch of the Foot family of unknown lineage produced Enoch Foot of Newburyport whose son Enoch became a landowner in Rocks Village in about 1803 and owned, among other properties the brick store on E. Main and Wharf Lane. He was also a justice of the peace, a coroner, a selectman, and a prominent man in the village. He was a state representative in 1823-1824. He married three times: Sally George, Dolly Ingersoll (sister of Betsy as mentioned above) and Ann Cushing. His children and grandchildren also lived in the village throughout the 1800’s. His daughter Caroline by Dolly Ingersoll married Warren Ordway and was by repute an intimate friend of ‘the Countess’.  Several of these Foots are buried in Greenwood and Linwood cemeteries.

A John C. Foot is listed as carpenter living in RV  (h. n.) in 1870

Pasco Foote b 1604 in Bedfordshire England, d September 28, 1670 m Margaret Stallion b abt 1627 but she might have been his son’s wife, see Pasco below.  Pasco is son of Robert Foote and Joane of Shalford; but see below. Robert b Royston 1553 d London bef 1608. Robert is son of John Foot (1523-1558), a tallow chandler, m Helen Warren of Royston. The Foot lineage is traced back to James Foote b abt 1470. However, there is this which disputes that lineage:

Pasco Foote was not the son of Robert Foote of Shalford and his wife Joan.

Pasco Foote and sixteen others, petitioned the court to be allowed to erect a Village near Jefferyes Creeke, which was granted.[5] This village would become known as Manchester or Manchester-by-the-sea, incorporated in 1645.

Pasco joined the church at Salem 14:9m:1652,[11] and on 6 Feb. 1653, all his children were baptized: Jon, Malaky, Samuell, Elizabeth, Mary, Isaack, Pasca, and Abigaile.[12]
