Moody Family

William Moody left Southhampton, England, Apr 10, 1634, on the ship “Mary & John”, and landed at Boston at the end of May. With 100 others, he removed to Ipswich, MA and remained there for the winter. He was then induced to settle in the new town of Newbury and was admitted as a Freeman May 6, 1635. A Saddler, Furrier & Smith [geocities]

The Moody line lived in Newbury for four generations after which Humphrey5 (son of Benjamin, brother of Moses) moved up the river Merrimack to Haverhill MA. [geocities] He married Abigail Peaslee.

Humphrey’s brother, Moses Moody (1752 – 1809)(Benjamin/Ruth Bradstreet, Caleb/Ruth Morse, Caleb/Sarah Pierce, Samuel/Mary Cutting, William/Sarah) marries Elizabeth Elliot and owns much of Rocks Village before 1809 when he dies.  Elizabeth gets most of the land and sells some off.  Then it goes to her adopted son Moses Swan Moody (buried in New Sharon, ME, with his birth family, the Swans).

Cutting Moody (1780 – 1834) (Joseph/Ann, Joseph/Lydia Challis, Cutting/Judith Little, Samuel/Mary Cutting, William/Sarah) and Anne Tenney, originally from Amesbury, owned land along River Road.  In an early map found at the Peabody Essex Library, back lane is called Cutting lane.  He owns 35 River Road (previously owned by Gideon Challis) probably down to Samuel Estabrook. Cutting is the grandson of Joseph Moody and Lydia Challis. He bought some land in 1808 from John Brown (186/74) and Sewall Short (185/33). His brother Edward Sargent Moody also purchased land along River Road in 1822 from Joseph and Sarah (Elliott) de Poyen (232/73). Edward subsequently sold this land to Cutting in 1823 (234/10) Cutting died in 1834 giving his land to his wife, daughter, and son Moses B. Moody.

Moses B. Moody (Cutting/Mary Tenney) marries Eliza Ann True – May 30, 1839.) and Moses Swan Moody (adopted Moses/Elizabeth Elliott) (marries Rebecca – Dean Oct. 27, 1826) end up in Salem.  Moses Swan Moody is there teaching.
