Nichols Family

Joseph Nichols came to Rocks Village from Amesbury.  He purchased land on the River from Barnabus Bradbury in 1752. His son Phineas (1740 – 1838) marries Ann Saunders (1741 – 1824) in 1759. In 1761 Phineas  purchases 21 River Road from his father Joseph.

Phineas worked as a blacksmith and he and Ann had thirteen (13) children.

21 River Road  stayed in the Nichols family until Phineas’ granddaughter (through Jacob) Eliza died in 1895. According to Emma Adeline Kimball in The Peaslees and Others of Haverhill and Vicinity, Phineas also kept a grocery in this house.

Emma Kimball also writes that Phineas built a house for his son Benjamin near the base of Saunders Hill. Benjamin’s son John (w. Julia Ann Chase, d. of W. D. S. Chase) purchased the house from Benjamin in 1838. Benjamin and his wife Polly moved to Antrim, NH to become a Deacon in 1806. John and Julia’s son William Munroe Nichols established the W. M. Nichols Manufacturer of Ladies’ and Men’s Boots, etc.
