Orne Family

The Orne family came from Wolfborough, NH by 1815, as Ephraim B. Orne purchased 1/2 of 47 East Main street. Ephraim and Hannah lived in 1/2 of 47 East Main Street in 1815 (207/81) but seems to have lost it to a mortgage with Jonathan Tewksbury in 1817. Later, in 1871, his son Thomas would purchase the whole house.  In 1820 they were living in Haverhill as follows: Enoch Foot, EBO, Amos B. Chase, Wm George.  In 1840, he was living in Haverhill as follows Richard Stuart, Ebenezer Fullington, Ephraim B. Orne, Luther Chase, John J. Chase, Joseph Esterbrook, Joseph Poyen, Stephen S. Chase.

Orne’s of NH (Wolfeborough/Wolfboro) were Horne. I found a record from middlesex county of Ephraim Bailey Horne changing his name to Ephraim Bailey ORNE in the 1800’s.

Hannah Jaques second child of Richard Jaques and Mary Emerson, born Dec 14, 1794 in West Newbury. Sister of Moses G. Jaques. She married Ephraim B Orne, son of William and Hannah Orne.

16 Jul 1835: Timothy Kinneson, Ephraim Orne, and Timothy Flanders accuses Rhoda Willcomb of making noise. She is sentenced by Nathaniel Ladd to 3 months hard labor in Ipswich.

Prior to his marriage to Mary Moody in 1847, John owned 1/2 of 34 East Main Street beginning in 1839 which he sold in 1847. John L. Orne and his wife seemed to live in the upper village area and had one daughter born in 1850 names Mary Abbie. In 1850 they lived between Lorenzo Colby, John’s mother Hannah, and Joseph Carr. 1855 he is living with his daughter and mother-in-law between Daniel Donnagan and Charles Ramsey (suggests East Broadway). John, Abby Moody, and Mary A. Orne lived between Daniel Murphy and John Murphy in 1860 which suggests Amesbury Line Road. John was living with only his daughter in 1865 between Charles Ramsey and John Murphy.  In 1870, John, his new wife and daughter Mary are living between Daniel Murphy and Charles Gelman. There is a mortgage in 1868 from George E. Elliott (750/37). This is in the triangle between Amesbury line and Old Amesbury Line road.  He also owned on the south side of Old Amesbury Line Road between Davis and John Murphy as indicated on the 1881 and 1892 maps. In 1950, there was a petition and order in the land court, doc #587A.

Thomas J. Orne was early on considered a shoemaker, butcher (when married) and then a horse dealer later in life. In 1850 he was living with his parents at the age of 18 and listed as a shoemaker.  From 1855 through 1860, he lived with Abby, Mary, and Annette Elliot between Dean Morse and Patrick Riley (suggests Wharf Lane). In 1870, Thomas and his wife Margaret Almira Cheney (Shoebinder) between Charles Tozier and Mercy Colby and in 1871, the purchase they bought 47E Main Street (828/195) from William Sawyer and Annette (Elliott) Sawyer. They lived there until 1894 when they sold the house to William and Elizabeth Taylor (1406/352) and moved to 64 Winter Street by 1900.  The 1910 census lists them at 91 Portland Street.  Margaret passed away in Jan of 1911 and Thomas of Pneumonia in October of 1911.

Martin Van Buren Orne (1830 – 1893) never married and remained in Rocks Village all of his life however there is no indication that he owned land. He is a shoemaker. In 1850 he lives with his brother John’s family. In 1860 he lived with is mother in Joseph Estabrooks’ household (maybe 37 East Main) with his younger siblings as his father died in 1845. In 1865, his sister and her daughter where living with him between Patrick Riley and Nellie Jaques which suggests Wharf Lane and in 1880 only his niece is living with him between Stephen Colby and Freeman Maynard (upper village).
