On Sept 7, 1861, mustered out on July 31, 1661 at Boston. Enlisted in company H, Mass 22nd infantry regiment, promoted full 1st lieutenant 1/1/1863, mustered out on July 11, 1863 at Gettysburg.
      8. Horace Morse Knowles born Dec 7, 1836.  Horace M Knowles of Haverhill, MA son of Rufus is also listed as crew of the bark Clarice out of New Bedford, age 22, light skin, light hair. Left Oct 10 1857 and arrived back May 23, 1862 with 687 barrels of sperm oil and 92 of whale oil, owned by Edward C James, Fredrick W Brown Master, destination Pacific. marries Elizabeth C. Ladd
