The Sanders family was one of the first families of Haverhill. Capt John Tuff Sanders (1605 – 1670) was born in Wiltshire England and died in Salem Mass. He married Hester Glover (1616 – 1663) who was born in Wiltshire England and died in Newbury, Mass. Their son James (1644 – 1721) was born in Salem and died in Haverhill, Ma.
In 1675 James Sanders was part of “A list of more houses built which fall under the law made 1660 which prohibits them from privileges in Common lands? (32)
James Sanders purchased land in Haverhill from George Brown in 1694 estimating 50 acres. This land is then gives/sold to his son James in 1699/1700 by deed (14/284) around County Road leading to Amesbury/Salisbury. In this same deed, it mentions land that James Sr. also purchased/sold to Joseph Whittier in 1663. Near boundary with Salisbury, James Davis, and Henry Palmer. Also potentially a piece of meadow from Samuel Dalton called East Meadow.

1701(?): In addition to the old garrisons, one was ordered to be kept in the northeasterly part of the town, in the house of James Sanders, who lived near the foot of the hill still known by his name, — “Sander’s Hill.” His house stood on or near the site of the present house of Richard Stuart. 1708 (1711): John and James were part of the committee to request a school “near the house of Mr John Whittier, on the common, between the two bridges, & between the house of Daniel Ela, and the Country road….”The latter were to be “20 ft long, 16 ft wide, & 8 ft stud, & furnished so as may be comfortable & convenient.”(32 pg 238)

A petition was also received for a school -house in the northwesterly part of the town, “between Hog-hill and the brick-kill bridge;” but “very few if any persons voted for it,” and the request was therefore denied.* (James and Henry) (32)
In a list thought to be between 1750 and 1760, John Sanders owned one slave.

1725: John, John Jr., Jonathan, and Nathaniel were admitted to Town of Pennycook (Concord, NH) (32)
“At the March meeting for 1726, ten persons living in the east part of the town petitioned for permission to assemble for worship at the Amesbury meeting house. Four years later, twelve persons^ in that vicinity petitioned the town to allow them to pay their “minister’s rate” in Amesbury, instead of Haverhill, — which was also agreed to”. 1741, James, Nathaniel, John and Jacob were taxed in East Haverhill.

1748 Jacob, John, and Nathaniel on committee to evaluate whether Nathaniel Peaslee was voted in as moderator with votes cast illegally (some from NH).
that John Sanders was greatly prejudiced against moderator Peaslee, because the latter had exj^osed and prevented the former from obtaining more money from the Province than belonged to him, by a false account. (32)
1757 Peter Sanders (1st Company) was on the list of every man enrolled in the militia (every man in town except those exempt)(32). 3rd Company: Samuel, Benjamin, John. Avery was taken prisoner at Ft. William Henry. The alarm list: Jacob. John Sanders in John Osgood’s Regiment.

Representative to General Court: 1718 – 1720-1724. John buried in Pentucket Cemetery. Admitted to Town of Pennycook in 1725 and received land grant. Sole executor of his father’s will and has all the lands “which I have before given him”. By deed (45/71) July 2, 1725 John transfers his homestead and land (~40 acres) in Haverhill next to Amesbury Line on County road and Green Whittier’s homestead, to his son John

Mr. Crowell continued to carry on the business for upward of forty years, and until his death, in 1860. Among those in his employ at the time of his death, were Mr. J. B. Merrill, who had been in his service, as apprentice and journeyman, for thirty-four years ; and Mr. Amos Saunders, who had worked for him nearly forty years (32 pg 540)
