Ayer Family

Many generations of the Ayer family lived in the East Parish in an area called Ayer’s Hill, near Corliss Hill and the Whittier homestead. Ayer’s Hill was named for James Ayer, born in 1686 (Samuel, Robert, John, Thomas), and a leading landowner in the early days of Haverhill. He was a deacon and was involved in the disputes over the Mass-NH boundary.

John Ayer(s) along with his wife Hannah and several of their children came to New England on board the ship James. The following account of the voyage of the James is from [Wikipedia]:

On June 3, 1635, the James joined four other ships, and set sail for the New World with just over 100 passengers as part of a fleet of five ships, including the families of Richard Mather, Captain John Evered and John Ayer. As they approached New England, a hurricane struck and they were forced to ride it out just off the coast of modern-day Hampton, New Hampshire. According to the ship’s log and the journal of Increase Mather, whose father Richard Mather and family were passengers, the following was recorded;

“At this moment,… their lives were given up for lost; but then, in an instant of time, God turned the wind about, which carried them from the rocks of death before their eyes. …her sails rent in sunder, and split in pieces, as if they had been rotten ragges…”

They tried to stand down during the storm just outside the Isles of Shoals, but lost all three anchors, as no canvas or rope would hold, but on Aug 13, 1635, torn to pieces, and not one death, all one hundred plus passengers the James manages to make it to Boston Harbor two days later.

The Angel Gabriel was wrecked off the coast of Maine, but the smaller, faster ships, the Mary, the Bess, and the Diligence outran the storm, and landed in Newfoundland on August 15, 1635.[1]

John Ayer was a well to do grocer family. On 12/25/1650, he was assigned land grant #52.

The following information on John Eyre’s parentage does not agree with the above information, but most sources agree with the above, ie that Thomas and Elizabeth Eyre were his parents:

JOHN EYRE (1582-1657) HANNAH AVERD-WEBB (1582-1688) JOHN AYER was born 2 September 1582, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, to Robert Eyre (1564-1603) and Cicely Cross (1567-1619.) His father was in the cloth industry in Wiltshire. The economic conditions in the cloth industry were particularly bleak in the early seventeenth century. If John followed his father into the cloth business his prospects at home would not have been great. John Ayer (1582–1657) was one of the original European settlers to Massachusetts, settling in Ipswich, Haverhill, and Salisbury. John’s last name back in the 1500-1600’s was spelt ‘Eyre’, but modern spelling is now ‘Ayer’. He came by sailing ship ‘James’ in 1635/37 from Salisbury, England. He was in Salisbury in 1640. He was in Haverhill, Essex, MA. with his wife & nine children where he is counted as one of the landholders of the town.  Their children as named in his will: 1.John (1622), 2.Nathaniel (1638), 3.Hannah (married Stephen Webster), 4.Rebecca (1624) marries John ASLEBEE OR ASLET, 5.Mary (1634) marries Nathan Parker, 6.Obadiah (1636), 7.(Robert  1625), 8.Thomas, 9.Peter Cornet (1633). Also had Sarah born in 1620.

Several Ayers were killed by Indians in the early 1700’s including Capt. Samuel Ayer.

The Ayers in Rocks Village have the following Lineage:
1. “John Eyre”, “John Ayers”, “John Ayres” (son of Thomas Eyre, MP and Elizabeth Rogers (September 2, 1582 England- in Haverhill) marries Hannah Webb (1582 England – 1688 Haverhill)
2. Cornet Peter Ayer; born in 1633 in England (son of John and Hannah Averd Web).
3. Samuel Ayer, (28 September 1669 in Haverhill – 2 January 1743), marries  Elizabeth Tuttle (24 Nov 1670 Ipswich – 29 Nov 1752),
4. Peter Ayer, born 1 October 1696, married Lydia Perley (sometimes written as Peasley) of Boxford on 17 January 1720-1, (1721 – 49/235: land from Samuel to Peter bounded by Merrimack River)

6. Samuel Ayer 1726 – 1762 (tanner who lived in Haverhill and Kingston, NH) (Samuel and Rachel (Kimball), Samuel, Peter, John) marries Rachel Farnum (1805 – xxx)
7. Samuel (19 Mar 1755 – xx) marries Sarah CHASE (Jan. 1, 1761 –  4 Jan 1844). Seems to be the first time they own land in the village.

Edmund Ayer owned 21 E. Main St. in 1856 (see Deeds, below).

Perhaps the home of Samuel Elliott now owned by his daughter, Mrs. Emma Elliott Cote, and Miss Mary Elliott, is one of the best groomed homes if the word can be applied to farms as well as people.  Mrs. Samuel Elliott was an Ayer great grand daughter of Anthony before her marriage and four generations of the Ayer family have lived on the estate, and the daughters have given it the name of Maternal Acres. This old homestead is not only beautiful to look at, but far more beautiful, when one considers the immense amount of good these ladies are doing in the world, the liberal way they are using their money for the good of mankind.  (33)  OR was this the Elliott homestead that is now the Swartz??

“The Ayer-Elliott Memorial Hall, added to the mansion, and dedicated June 16, 1917, was the gift of Mrs. Emma S. Elliott Cote and Miss Mary R. Elliott in memory of their father and mother, Samuel and Sophia (Ayer) Elliott (52)
