Chase, John son of Aquila

John James Chase, s. Aquila, b. Nov. 2, 1655, dies Feb. 26, 1740, a. 84 y. 4 m.
He was a soldier in King Philip’s war and was under Captain Turner in the Falls Fight, May 18, 1676.

A grandson of John through his son Jacob, David Chase (1710-1783) had many descendants who lived in the village, so many in fact that there is a separate David Chase page.

A sibling of David Chase is Lydia Chase whose daughter Ruth Blay was executed by hanging in Portsmouth, NH. for hiding the body of her illegitimate child who might have been stillborn. She was not convicted of killing the baby.

Other descendants of John include William Davis Stickney Chase (1792-1831) (William, Ezra, Jacob, John, Aquila), a prominent citizen of Rocks Village who donated land for the Baptist Church on Amesbury Line Road and lived nearby in the early 1800’s. William DS Chase, as he was known, had a daughter Julia Ann who married John Nichols, grandson of Phineas Nichols, an early settler of the village. William married Zelenda Gage from Bradford whose sister Nancy married John Ingersoll, village teacher and son of village trader Zebulon Ingersoll. William’s sister Mary married into the Ayer family. His son William Stickney Chase b 1828, was listed as a manufacturer in the 1865 Mass. census. Supposedly two of William D S Chase’s grandsons were in the shoe manufacturing business including Herbert Stickney Chase, but the only record we can find is a son of William Stickney named Herbert E. Chase born in 1861 who was indeed a shoe manufacturer in Haverhill (1865 census).
