Bailey, Bayley Families

There are at least two different ancestral lines of Baileys that immigrated to New England in the 1600’s. One is represented by John Bailey Sr. from Wiltshire, England who settled in Salisbury and Newbury. Another line starts with two brothers, James and Richard Bailey from Yorkshire, England who settled in Rowley. Descendants of John Bailey later settled in Rocks Village and married into families already settled there. Several descendants of Richard Bailey also settled in the village. These lines are expanded here.

The two Bailey lines connect through marriage into the Emery family, whose immigrant ancestor John Emery III married Alice Grantham and helped found the town of Newbury.  John Bailey’s son John Bailey, Jr.  married Eleanor Emery, daughter of John Emery III/Alice Grantham. James Bailey married Lydia Emery, sister of John Emery III.

Three of Samuel Chase (1690) (Moses, Aquila) and Sarah Stewart Chase’s children marry Baileys: two descend from Richard Bailey/Edna Halstead:
1. Hannah Chase (1768 – xx) marries Major Samuel Bailey, Jr.  (Feb. 15, 1765-xx west Newbury) (Samuel/Anna Noyes, Joseph/Abigail Webster, Joseph/Abigail Turnbull, Richard/Edna Halstead)
2.  Ann (Nancy) (1755 – 1818) marries William Bailey (1750 – 1817) (Jonathan/Rebecca Hardy, Richard/Joanna Webster, Joseph/Abigail Turnbull, Richard/Edna Halstead) in 1778.

A third child, Sarah Chase, marries into the  John Bailey/Eleanor Emery line:
3.  Sarah (Sally) Chase (1761-xx) marries Joshua Bailey (1757 -1809) in 1781 (or 1799) (Joshua/Elisabeth Chase, Joshua/Sarah Coffin, Isaac/Sarah Titcomb, Isaac/Sarah Emery, John/Eleanor Emery)

Samuel Chase, born in 1690, bought 18 acres of land in the village from John Swett sometime before Samuel’s death in 1743. This land comprises most of the hilly woodland behind Colby’s Lane. The land passed to his sons Samuel Jr. and John and eventually to Samuel Jr’.’s sons  who along with his sister Hannah, Ann, and Nancy Bayley, sold 3 acres of it to their mother Sarah Chase in 1796 (202/221). See  http://www.rocksvillage.org/east-main-street/19-east-main-street/.  Sarah later marries Thomas Noyes.

A descendant of Richard Bailey, Elizabeth, married Robert Hastings and settled near the village in what is now known as the Hastings-Morse house opposite Greenwood cemetery on E. Main St.

Daniel C. Bailey (1796 – 1845) (Stephen/Ann Carr, Stephen/Ann Pillsbury, Stephen/Hannah Kelly, Joshua/Sarah Coffin, Isaac/Sarah Emery, John/Eleanor Emery) and Lois T. Barnard sell the small triangle in the “Island containing 4 acres” to David Elliott in 1832. David Elliott sells it to the city for the School house.

Daniel is the brother of Betsey C. Bailey (1791 – xx) who is Simeon Chase Jr.’s (1790 -1872) third wife (marries 1844).  Simeon and Betsy live in the “witch house” on Colby’s lane.  There is a photo of Simeon Jr. and Betsy C. in front of their house.

Simeon Chase’s father Simeon (1760 – 1803 at sea) also marries a Bayley,  Eunice (1762 – xx) 1787.  Eunice is Betsy C.’s aunt which makes Simeon Jr. Betsy’s first cousin. When Simeon dies, Eunice’s father Stephen Bailey is made guardian of their children – Amos (1788-1852), Simeon (1791-1872), William (1795 – xxx). Probate # 5084 dated 1805. The estate is also ordered to be dispersed.

The Simeon Chase family continues their connection with the John Bailey line.  Two of Simeon’s daughters by his first wife, Ann Woodward, married two Bailey brothers from Barre, Vermont. ELIZA JANE CHASE (1820 – 1905) married Thomas Wells Bailey (1819 – xx) in xxx, and Ann Chase (xx – xx) married (William) Harrison Bailey (1824-1855) in xxx (Harrison is said to have married a widow her maiden name being Ann Chase). Ann B., Marries Thomas Thompson, mariner, June 17, 1841.  William Harrison and Thomas are the sons of Joshua Bailey (1790 – 1839)  (Ebenezer/Sarah Bailey, Joshua/Betsy Chase, Joshua/Sarah Coffin, Isaac/Sarah Emery, John/Eleanor Emery) and Betsey Clark (xx-xx) in 1814 who moved to Barre, VT.

One additional connection to Rocks Village is that Abigail (Hills) Bailey (xx – 1776), widow of Isaac Bailey (Isaac/Sarah Titcomb, Isaac/Sarah Emery, John/Eleanor Emery) , marries Caleb Moody Jr. in 1756. (Caleb III is the uncle of Humphrey and Moses Moody and Ruth Moody Ingersoll).

Additionally, a current resident of Rocks Village is descended from James Bailey of Rowley.

Salisbury/Newbury Branch: John Bailey Sr.

The ancestry of this John Bailey branch is unclear. It might come from John Bayley of Chittoe, Wiltshire, England [Geni] but many sources say “unknown”. This branch connects to the James/Richard Bailey Rowley branch by marriage into the Emerys.

John Bailey, Sr. born in Bronham (or Chippenham), Wiltshire, England abt 1586/90, died 1651 Newbury, MA. m Ann Bayly (her maiden name) in 1611/12 in England. Emigrated on the ship Angel Gabriel with his son John, Jr. and probably with his daughter Joanna. The ship was shipwrecked in a storm off Penaquid, now Bristol, Maine. He settled first at Salisbury about 163x. He was a weaver by trade but settled into fishing in the Powow River, living in a log cabin that he built on 50 acres in what is now Amesbury. He left his wife Ann and his other children in England. On 22 April 1649: The court of Salisbury freed John Bailey of the obligation of bringing his wife and family over from England, “she utterly refusing to come.” In 1650 he moved to Newbury to live with his son John, and in 1651 he was sued by the courts and told to return to his wife in England or bring the family over. In his will in 1651 he left property and money to John Jr., Joanna, and his children still in England with the stipulation that they would receive more if they immigrated. He also left money for their passage from England. There is no evidence that they ever came. John and Ann’s children:

Notes

Jacob Bailey s of Joshua Emery Bailey (Isaac/Sarah Emery, John/Eleanor Emery) and Sarah Coffin

Revolutionary War General. He moved to Hampstead, New Hampshire,

and was a Captain with the British in the French and Indian War,
later receiving promotion to Colonel. He settled in Newbury, VT
in 1764 and was one of the founders of the town, serving as Judge
of the Court of Common Pleas and Justice of the Peace. In 1776 he
was named to Vermont’s Council of Safety and appointed Brigadier
General of the Vermont Militia. That year he began work on the
famed Bayley-Hazen Military Road to connect Newbury to St. Johns,
Quebec. Later in 1776 Bayley was appointed Commissary General of
the Continental Army’s Northern Department. He was friendly with
the St. Francis Indians, who provided him important intelligence
on Burgoyne’s army during its invasion. This enabled Bayley to keep
Generals Schuyler and Gates informed about the size and movement of
Burgoyne’s force, which played a key role in Continental Army’s
victory at the Battle of Saratoga, where Bayley commanded a division.
During and after the Revolution, Bayley continued his involvement
with Vermont’s government, by serving as Newbury Selectman and Town
Meeting Moderator, Orange County Probate Judge, Chief Judge of the
County Court, and member of the Governor’s Council. He died in
modest financial circumstances, never receiving compensation for
the personal expenses he incurred in support of the Revolution.

Bayley Hazen Military Road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bayley-Hazen Military Road runs directely through the Northeast
Kingdom of Vermont. It starts in Newbury (town), Vermont and proceeds
to the north 54 miles to Hazen’s Notch near the Canadian border. The
Bayley Hazen Military Road was built between 1760-1779. It was to be
used by General Benedict Arnold to move his troops from Southern VT
into Quebec for a proposed second assault during the later part of
the American Revolution. During the war it was used little, but helped
shaped the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. The Bayley Hazen Military Road
gets its name from Col. Jacob Bayley and Gen. Moses Hazen. Col. Jacob
Bayley worked on the road during the French and Indian War in 1760 and
Gen. Moses Hazen continued the work 19 years later in 1779. There were
hundreds of men at work to construct it, and in 1779 it was completed.
General Hazen then went on to the Siege of Yorktown.
