Bartlett Family

Several members of the Bartlett family married into the Moody and Nichols families of Rocks Village. These Bartletts are descended from Richard Bartlett born in 1575 in England who immigrated to Newbury along with his wife Joanne and several of their children. Richard was a cordwainer.

Josiah Bartlett b 1729 (Steven, Richard, Richard, Richard 1575) signed the Declaration of Independence and later was elected governor of New Hampshire. His house that he rebuilt because his first house was burned by the Tories, still stands in Kingston, NH. He was a physician and all three of his sons and seven of his grandsons would follow him as physicians.

Richard Bartlett (1575 Ernley/Earnley, Sussex, England – 1647 Newbury, MA) m. Joanne.(1576-1643) Richard came to Newbury in the ship “Mary and John” in 1634 probably with his wife and several of their children; made freeman, May 17, 1637. He is the son of Edward and Alice Bartlett. The ancestors of the Bartletts came from Normandy with William the Conqueror and fought at the battle of Hastings. Stopham, England is the ancestral seat of the family. See also:

Bailey Bartlett

He received a common school education, which was greatly imroved by a taste for reading. He was interested in agriculture and mechanics, and he turned out, for recreation, some beautiful pieces of furniture.

He was a friend of John and Samuel Adams, boarding with them in Philadelphia when the Declaration of Independence was made, in July, 1776; and was present in the yeard of Congress Hall when it was proclaimed.

In 1783 he was a member of the legislature, and in 1789 a state senator. He was sheriff of the county from 1789 until his death, period of forty-one years, except for six months in 1812; and was also county treasurer. He was a member of the convention that adopted the constitution of the United States, and of that which was called to amend the State constitution in 1820.

From 1797 to 1801, he was a member of congress; one of the sessions being the last at Philadelphia, and the other the first held in Washington.

At the age of eighty he was on duty in court during the Knapp trial at Salem, and after sentence had been pronounced, he yielded to the strain upon him, and on reaching home took his bed, living nineteen days more.
