Chase, Moses, son of Aquilla

Ensign Moses Chase (1663-1743) of Newbury, son of Aquila Chase, married twice and had ten children. Several of his descendants were involved in the history of Rocks Village. One son, Samuel, bought 18 acres of hilly woodland in the village from John Swett sometime before Samuel’s death in 1743. This land is bounded on the north by E. Main St. by Twelve Rod Way on the west, the river on the south, and on the east by a line running north-south that is well to the west of Colby’s Lane. About half of Samuel Chases’ lands passed to his son Samuel Chase, Jr. and about half via his son John to other persons. Samuel Chase Jr. who married Sarah Stewart in 1732, bequeathed his portion of the land to his four sons who sold three acres of it to their mother in 1796. At about this same time, Sarah Stewart Chase married (2) Major Thomas Noyes. His niece, Mary Noyes, married another Moses Chase, a nephew of her first husband, Samuel Chase Jr. This Moses Chase and several of his sons settled nearby on Corliss Hill, and he and family members are buried in Plaistow, NH.

Another son of Ensign Moses, Moses Jr., had a son Humphrey who owned land and settled uphill from the village on Corliss Hill. Humphrey’s son Moses (1762-1837) married Sarah Flanders. From registered deeds we know that someone with the name Moses Chase lived in the “witch house” on Colby’s Lane in the early 1800’s, and we strongly suspect it was this Moses and his wife Sarah who may have contributed to the name of the house. The actual purchaser of the house was a tanner from Maine also called Moses Chase, likely the son of Moses and Sarah.

Humphrey’s brother Wells Chase and his descendants settled in Amesbury and Salisbury. There were several intermarriages between this branch and the Morse family, descended from Lt. Anthony Morse, and the Davis family.
