Carr Family

In 1773 James Carr, an innholder, bought nineteen acres of land north of E. Main St. in the village, part of the land that was originally distributed to William Holdridge by the town of Haverhill soon after the town was established in 1640. The land had been in the possession of first, Zachariah Davis, and then, Dr. Simeon Brown. It did not include the strip along the river, i.e., the river side of River Rd., which had a few houses on it at the time. In 1774 James sold the 19 acres to his son Francis including a ‘dwelling house’  (deed 134/23, see Deeds below). The deed included a cutout for a small piece of land owned by Ephraim Elliott. From that deed as well as some early census data, the speculation is that the dwelling house that James Carr transferred to his son was on the site of the Johnson Tavern. Francis later sold a small piece of land along E Main to his brother Samuel, who probably built the house still standing at 38 E. Main St.

In the late 1700’s James’ sons Francis Carr (1751-1821) and Samuel Carr (b 1760-1-) and Daniel Carr (1765-1799 ) were involved with other land deals in or near the village. Daniel Carr bought land behind the Countess house on the south side of  E. Main St. in 1795.

Francis Carr married into the Elliott family by marrying Mary Elliott, daughter of Ephraim and Mary Wingate Elliot. Ephraim Elliott owned land in the village on the north side of E. Main St.  Samuel Carr married Sarah Carr, their first cousin. Abigail Carr married William Lovejoy Abbott and later Elias Weld, both of whom owned land in the village. Hannah and Judith both married Wingates. Hannah lived in Haverhill with her family and is in the 1790 Haverhill census. See Elliot, Wingate, Abbott,  family pages, and 38 E. Main St. and Johnson Tavern.

Francis Carr was a Massachusetts state representative and a US Congressman. He had a son, James Carr, born in 1777, who was also a congressman. Another son, Joshua Wingate Carr, became mayor of Bangor, Maine (part of Massachusetts at the time). By 1804 the family had moved to Orrington, Maine (now Brewer Village).

Another Carr line descends from Charles Carr of Salisbury, MA, died 1810. Several of his grandchildren through his son Joseph settled in the village and worked as shoemakers in the 1800’s. This Carr family had a long association with the Ramsey family.

This Robert Carr line is unattached to the other Carr lines:

Robert Carr/ Robbart Care Born 5 Jan  in Potterne, Wiltshire, England m Ann Taylor married 14 Aug 1726 in Earl Stoke, Wiltshire, England Died 1768. They had:

Catherine Carr b 16 Jan 1726  (chr) Potterne, Wiltshire, England to Robert and Anne.

James Carr Born  in Edington, Wiltshire, England. Died 1786 England

There is a Robert Carr b 1744/5 in Salisbury, MA shown here as son of Robert of Potterne, England and Ann Taylor, but it is more likely that he is son of Robert Carr (William, George) born that year in Salisbury, MA where his father Robert Sr. lived. There is no evidence one way or another that he immigrated from England without his family. See below.

Carr ancestry: [ Carr family records]

Three Carr brothers from England of unknown parents had descendants who were early settlers in New England: Benjamin, William, and George, all born in the 1590’s. A fourth brother James born in 1601 ran away from home and was eventually lost at sea. Benjamin Carr was born in London, England, Aug. 18, 1592. He married Martha Hardington, in London, Sept. 2, 1613. Benjamin and his wife Martha both died in London, but their four sons made the trip to America. Their sons Robert and Caleb went to live with their uncle William, who had already come over and settled in Rhode Island. Their son Richard b 1621 immigrated in 1635 on the ship Abigail with his brother Andrew. He went to live with his uncle George, ending up in Salisbury, Mass.  Andrew eventually went to sea, possibly with his uncle James. William b 1597 m Susan Rothchild in 1619, had their only son George in 1620, and sailed on the Fortune with Capt. Roger Williams to Plymouth, Mass. arriving Nov 7, 1621. There is a story that many people do not believe that says that, with an Indian guide, they trekked through the wilderness for 48 days to arrive at the future Bristol, Rhode Island in July of 1622. Their descendants for the most part settled in Rhode Island. George b abt 1599  was an early settler of Salisbury, Mass. The Masssachusetts Carrs, George  and his nephew Richard, are described below. Unfortunately we have very little information on Richard.

Richard Carr (Benjamin) b 5 Jan 1621 in London, England resided Hampton NH and later Salisbury, MA. He died May 17, 1689. He is distinct from Capt. Richard Carr, son of George. Some sources say he had a child Samuel Carr abt 1680 who married Sarah Haley, but it is more likely that it was Capt. Richard Carr who had Samuel, see below. He had children:

  1. Elizabeth Carr

George Carr (1599/1615 England -1682 Salisbury, MA)  m1 Lucinda Devenport in England and m(2) Elizabeth Dexter ( some sources say Elizabeth Oliver) abt 1639 in Salisbury, MA. He and Lucinda immigrated in 1620 and lived with the Pilgrims, but it is disputed whether he was a passenger on the Mayflower. Lucinda died the first winter in Plymouth. He removed to Ipswich and then finally to Salisbury, MA. He was a shipwright and a blacksmith.  He was granted the island in the Merrimack where he was residing, Carr’s Island, to live on and perform shipbuilding. The island remained in the family for generations. They ran a ferrying business there. He might be son of [Sir] William Carr b 1542 London and Mary Ann Clifford b 1565.   William Carr is son of [Sir]John Kerr b: 17 JUN 1500 in Ferniehirst, Midlothian, Scotland

Marriage 1 Lucinda DEVENPORT in England

Marriage 2 Elizabeth Dexter b 1623 Great Bowden, England d 1691 Carr’s Island, Salisbury, MA (disputed here: Elizabeth Oliver b: in Boston,Mass c: 24 APR 1624 in St.Stephens, London, England but elsewhere the same source has Elizabeth Dexter also.)

  • Married ABT 1639 in Salisbury,Essex,MA

Children of George Carr and Elizabeth:

James Carr and Sarah Follinsbee’s children.

Notes on James Carr here.

Much of the information here is from source [93] and this

Francis Carr (James 1727,John, James 1650, George): (1751-1821). He was a private in Captain Ebenezer Colby’s company of minute men, Colonel Johnson’s regiment which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1776 to Cambridge. He served 6 days. In 1812, he was elected as a Republican to the Twelfth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Barzillai Gannett, serving until 1813. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his mercantile pursuits until his death at age 69 and was the father of Congressman James Carr. Charles Carr line

Charles Carr, grandfather of several Carrs who lived in the village in the 1800’s, is of unknown parentage and birth location. He has not been found in other New England Carr lines, so it is possible he was born in Ireland or England and immigrated. One possibility is Charles Carr b Dublin 30 Mar 1760 to William and Elizabeth Carr. Another is b 10 Jul 1765 London, England to Thomas and Mary Carr or 29 Sep 1771 to Charles Carr at Newcastle upon Tyne, UK or bapt 04 Nov 1773 in Holborn, Middlesex, England to Charles and Elizabeth Carr (non-conformist records index), others. There is a Charles Care from church records in Kinderhook, NY b to Charles Care and Sara Davis 8 April 1764 (chr).

James Carr (Francis, James,John, James 1650, George) b 1777:

James attended Phillips Exeter and Byfield Academies, and then went to sea as clerk on the U.S.S. Crescent. He served two years as secretary to the United States Consul at Algiers. He then joined his parents (who had migrated to Bangor, Maine), engaging in mercantile pursuits and serving as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1806–1811) for the District of Maine.

Carr was elected as a Federalist to the Fourteenth United States Congress (1815–1817), the second person from Bangor to occupy that office (following his father).

He was drowned in the Ohio River on August 24, 1818. While traveling with his family on a steamboat, his 9-year-old daughter Mary fell overboard just below Louisville, Kentucky, and Carr entered the water in a failed attempt to save her. Neither of their bodies were ever recovered, though a memorial to Carr was erected at Bangor’s Mount Hope Cemetery.[1]

Carr was married to Betsey Stelle Jarvis, who migrated to Illinois along with two brothers following the tragedy on the river. The Carrs remained a prominent mercantile and political family in Bangor despite James’ death (see Francis Carr).

Joshua Wingate Carr b 1796 (Francis, James)

The Carr-Wing House on State Street in Bangor, which Joshua Carr remodeled in the Gothic Revival style in 1844, remains a local architectural landmark. Joshua’s great-grandson Elliott Carr Cutler (b. Bangor, 1888), became a famous surgeon and professor of surgery at the Harvard Medical School, while Elliott’s brother Robert Cutler, became the first National Security Advisor under President Dwight Eisenhower. Robert wrote about the Carr-Wing House and his “Great-Uncle Frank” (Francis Wingate Carr) in his autobiography No Time for Rest (1966).
