Brown Family

Dr. Simeon Brown ( d. 1760) was an early settler of Rocks Village. Coming from Kingston, NH., he bought 19 acres of land from John Swett in 1742, north of E. Main St., and lived in a house on River Road. The house burned down in 1748. According to Phineas Nichols, there were but 4 houses in the village in the 1740’s, and Dr. Brown’s was one of them. He married Mrs. Hannah (Brown) Young, and they had several children registered in Haverhill. One son, Henry Young Brown, received a land grant near Fryeberg, ME and founded the town of Brownfield, Maine as well as Fryeberg Academy. Simeon’s sons later sold the River Road land to James Carr (1773).

Enoch Browne bought a small lot along River Road from John Swett in 1733.

John and Mary Brown involved in land sales on River Road in the early 1800’s.

Abigail Parker (1777 – 1859), who owned land on Wharf Lane, married Dea. Moses Brown of West Newbury. Formerly married to Frederick Parker. Buried in Greenwood

Whether any of these Browns are related has not yet been resolved.

Account of burning of Dr. Brown’s house from [Chase] p. 324, quoted from [Mirick]:

“The house of Dr. H. Brown, at Holt’s Rocks, was destroyed by
fire on the 22d of January (1748), and his daughter, aged 23 years,
and a young man who was then living with him, a son of D. Currier,
were burnt to death. Their remains were interred in a field, now
overgrown with trees, owned by John Johnson Esq., and grave-
stones erected to their memory. But they are thrown down and so
broken and defaced, that the letters are nearly illegible. With the
assistance of Mr, Johnson, we found them, lying flat on the ground,
and nearly concealed from view. It is a very romantic situation, on
the side of a hill covered with young sycamores, and which slopes
gently until it reaches the Merrimack. This gentleman also informs
us that other persons, principally infants, were buried in the same
place ; but no monuments were erected to their memory, and the
mounds have totally disappeared.”

Deeds:

When he died, Simeon still had:  3 acres of salt marsh in Salisbury, 1/4 acre being part of river lot bought from Barnabas Bradbury, 20 acres in Haverhill with buildings.

87/139 John Swett to Simeon Brown in 1742, 19A of land north of E Main St. bound by Back Lane and Merrimack St. but  bound on east by the road (2-rod way), not the river. (This leaves the lots on the river available for Swett to sell to others, which he did.) This is the land that John Swett bought from Zacharia Davis (55/118) who bought it from William Holdridge who acquired it from the third division of Haverhill town lands in the late 1600’s.

(91/21): 1744, June 5th:  Barnabus Bradbury to Simeon Brown one half part of land which Barnabus bought with William Morse of Newbury and from Moses Baudy of Amesbury. Southerly by land of Bradbury, Easterly on Merrimack River, Northerly by highway that leads to Merrimack River, westerly on the land of Simeon Brown which he bought from John Swett.

(134/22): Henri Young Brown of Brownfield,  York, Me., Simeon
Brown of Haverhill, blacksmith; Ruth Brown of Kingston, N.H (Mantle maker) for 146lbs sells to James Carr of Haverhill (Yeoman), land near Sweats Ferry in Haverhill, 19 acres bds. on highway to Sweats Ferry “near Kingston” 1774.

Mary Brown quits her rights to the premises, formerly property of her husband John Brown, for $30.

Thomas and Rebecca Brown sold land (who was rebecca?)

1740: (82/91) Enoch Brown to Barnabas Bradbury 1/4 acre lately of Samuel and Elizabeth Batchelder bounded by Merrimac River, George Sinclair, 2 rod way of John Swett, and twelve rod way with buildings and fences.
